Amanda Heffner

Major:  Physics

I've been a Physics major since the fall of 1998.  My main interest is astronomy/astrophysics.  Within that framework, Big Bang particle physics, galactic structure and formation, gamma-ray bursts, and pulsars are my primary fascinations.  I served as the SPS President during the academic years 1998-1999, 1999-2000.  I'm currently the SPS Treasurer.

After completing a BS in Physics, I plan to continue my studies at the graduate level, ultimately earning a doctorate in astrophysics.  Then, I'll teach and/or do research.  Perhaps here in the US, perhaps overseas.

Currently, I'm fortunate to have two of the (possibly) greatest jobs in the world.  First, I'm the Student Assistant at the Lake Afton Public Observatory.  It is there that I work with some of the greatest people I've ever met, plus I get to share with others the wonders and excitement of astronomy.  Second, I'm a research assistant for Dr. David Alexander, who's working on NASA-funded research of low-temperature stellar atmospheres (cool-temperature stars).

My interests include the music, art, and religions of different cultures; the 'conflict' between science and religion; and Buddhism.  Hobbies include (almost) all things Star Wars; playing the piano and flute; listening to classical music and film scores; and The X-Files.  Another hobby which was formerly a 'profession' is musical theatre -- singing, dancing, and acting.

If you want to contact me, or give any feedback on this student section of WSU's website (I'm the 'web guru' for the student pages), email me:  asheffner@wichita.edu
